How to track brand mentions in ChatGPT
Method 1: manual check (free)
- List 10–20 questions a buyer would ask, e.g. "best CRM for small agencies" — not your brand name.
- Run each in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google (AI Overviews), ideally logged out or in a temporary chat so past history has less influence.
- Record in a spreadsheet: mentioned yes/no, position, competitors named, sources cited.
- Repeat on a schedule (e.g. weekly). Answers vary run to run, so look at trends, not one result.
Method 2: an AI visibility tool
Tools automate the same process across many prompts and engines, and add competitor share of voice and citation tracking. Compare options in our best AI visibility tools guide, or start with free tiers and trials.
What to do with the data
- Find which sources the engines cite for your category and aim to be present there.
- Fix inaccurate descriptions of your brand on your own site and profiles.
- Track competitors so you can see share-of-voice changes.

FAQ
Can I see if ChatGPT mentions my brand for free?
Yes. Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers would ask and note whether your brand appears. Repeat over time, since answers vary.
How often should I check?
Weekly is a reasonable starting cadence for manual checks; paid tools offer daily or configurable refresh.
