What is AI visibility (and GEO)?
AI visibility is how often, and how favorably, AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot and Google AI Overviews mention or cite your brand when people ask questions in your category. GEO (generative engine optimization) is the work of improving it. You will also see it called AEO (answer engine optimization) or LLM visibility.
How it differs from SEO
- SEO tracks rankings in a list of links; AI visibility tracks whether you appear inside a generated answer.
- AI answers vary between runs, so tools sample the same prompt repeatedly and report trends.
- Citations (the sources an answer links to) matter: being cited, or appearing in sources the AI cites, is a key lever.
What to measure
- Mention rate: share of tracked prompts where your brand appears.
- Position / share of voice: where you appear relative to competitors.
- Sentiment: how you are described.
- Citations: which URLs the engines cite.

FAQ
What does GEO stand for?
Generative engine optimization: improving how AI assistants mention and cite your brand.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. AI assistants often draw on web content and search results, so classic SEO still feeds AI visibility; GEO adds tracking and optimizing for AI answers.
